Welcome to the first review by dindd- shortened from my name, Adinda-. Well, actually I've been longing to do a review for every movie I've watched, every book I've read, or even every place I've visited. But it's just me being so lazy I guess. So, let's jump to the review then!
Sophismata, a fiction novel written by Alanda Kariza and published in 2017. The story itself was about love and politics. Sophismata is a philosophy term means ambiguous sentence, confusing, grey, that makes us questioning ourselves whether the truth or logic were real or not.
The story between Sigi and Timur -the main characters- remains strong. I can tell that both of them have such a lucid vision. Not to mention that Sigi is explicitly assertive, Timur keeps up with his charmingly persistent ambition. They were once a school mate back in senior high school. After years, they met again as a grown up individuals that were both settled with their job. Sigi worked as admistration staff in DPR (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat known as House of Representatives) in capital city, while Timur worked in judicial monitoring organization after finishing his master study in the UK. They met in an unpredictable evening when Sigi has to accompany her superior to meet a guy who wanted to discuss about nothing but politics. Sigi hates politics actually, yet works in the political industry. Different from Sigi, Timur has a strong desire of establishing a political party.
The setting used in this book were mostly in two cities, Jakarta and Bandung -Sigi's hometown-. The place setting showed us a little bit of modern lifestyle in capital city, they were taken in Sigi's office, presidency staf's headquarters, night club, Timur's apartment, and other places.
Not only talking about politics, the main characters prove us that there is beauty in differences. Even though both of them have their own dreams to be reached, they were unconditionally in love with each other. Sigi's character as a woman is really one of a kind. She is not afraid in delivering opinions, whether to her superior or Timur. She is also assertive in telling her feeling towards Timur, not like any common girls who hide their feelings and wait for miracle happened between them. There was one scene when she asked Timur about their relationship, is it black or white. I mean, who does that? Sigi always have principles that everything has to be black or white, she does not count grey in her life. She wanted everything to be clear.
Other than that, the conflict lies between her passion and what she was doing at that time. Timur emerges not to help her follow it, she does not need that because she always knew what to do.
For me personally, this book is giving such a newness in Indonesian fiction literature. The author delivered a fresh theme, which is politics, something that we are not so familiar about, and combined it with young love story, which is something that most of the readers are interested in.
Goodreads gave 3.6 out of 5 rating on this book, which I agreed. For those who are craving for a romance yet not cheesy, you might want to grab this when you stroll around at the bookstore.
